Rules for Use of the Library |
|
|
|
-
All borrowed publications must be signed out.
-
Only persons with formal Carnegie affiliation (post-docs, pre-docs,
summer interns, visiting investigators, etc.) are entitled to sign out
material. Borrowing privileges for newcomers will be approved only after
notification of CIW appointment is received from the DTM or Geophysical
Laboratory office.
-
Current issues of journals on display in the Reading Room (generally the
issues for the past year) are not to be signed out or removed from the
Main Building under any circumstances. They may be removed briefly for
photocopying, but then must be returned immediately.
-
Borrowing of back volumes (bound or unbound) of journals from the periodicals
stacks is strongly discouraged--desired articles should be photocopied
and the volumes then be returned to their places. If necessary, however,
these journals may be signed out for a period of one week.
-
Books and maps may be signed out for extended periods, but when their use
is completed please return them.
-
Removal of library books and maps from the campus (e.g., to home offices)
is discouraged, especially during those times when the borrower is away
for extended periods. Journals may not be taken off-site. To maintain the
accessibility of our collection, users are asked to keep borrowed items
in some prominent spot on their campus book shelves, where they may be
readily spotted if someone else requires the material.
-
Staff members hosting non-permanent personnel should bring these people
to the library at the start of their tenure and introduce them to Shaun
Hardy and/or Merri Wolf, so that their identities are known and they can
be instructed on the operation and rules of the library.
-
Staff members are expected to assist library staff by ensuring that their
postdocs and visitors return everything they borrowed.
-
Recommendations for new book purchases are welcome and should be directed
to Shaun Hardy, with an indication of relevance to current research interests.
